Nikon ProStaff 550 - Review and Comparison

Cumulative Review Score: 90(73)

Nikon ProstaffThe Nikon ProStaff 550 was generally well liked by most reviewers.  Many users appreciated its small size and clear optics.  Most operators found the rangefinder easy to use and accurate.  There seemed to be a general consensus that the Prostaff 550 was a good value rangefinder for having a price of about $200, with some users commenting that it was a big step up from some of the other rangefinders in this price range.  Hunters purchased this model for strictly bow hunting, strictly rifle hunting, and some purchased it for use with both bow and gun. Few owners complained of the lack of an angel compensation feature, some felt it wasn’t worth the extra money, while others noted that there wasn’t generally much practical difference between an angle compensated reading and a normal reading under most circumstances. So is the Nikon Prostaff 550 the best pick for a budget rangefinder?  Find out how the Prostaff 550 does when compared to the other options in the budget rangefinder category.

Owner’s Manual Highlights:
The Nikon Prostaff 550 Laser Rangefinder displays measurements in either yards or meters, and unlike the RifleHunter 550 it does not have Nikon’s ID feature or a target priority mode. The Prostaff 550 is set for distant target priority and this cannot be changed like other Nikon rangefinders.  However, this rangefinder does have a continuous mode which allows you to scan targets and receive readings without having to push a button every time, this feature was commented on by a couple reviewers who found this option very useful.  The Nikon Prostaff 550 also report distance in .5 yard measurement out to 100 yards and then switches to displaying readings in 1 yard increments.

LRR Thoughts:
If you are looking for a quality rangefinder in the $200 and under price range there are definitely worse choices than the Nikon Prostaff 550.  While it does not have some of the features that more expensive rangefinders have, it is relatively small, compact, lightweight, fairly priced rangefinder that would serve many hunters well.
